Basement Floor Replacement
After 130 years of normal usage and high humidity, the basement floor structure needed replacement. The 4 x 10 inch beams were replaced with pressure treated beams for increased durability.
The stairs to the first floor were temporarily secured to the first floor beams to allow replacement of the wood structure underneath the basement floor.
Inside the mill and above the water wheel is the forebay which serves as the reservoir for constant water flow to the water wheel when in operation. The waste gate and flume provide a means for the miller to drain the forebay and control excess water. After years of oxidation the waste gate flume deteriorated and no longer directed the waste water down toward the tail race. It was removed and replaced and the resulting waste gate operation is seen below.
Installing new flume on forebay
Over a century of exposure to the elements had rendered the original slate roof unrepairable.
